The threat hanging over the future viability of glass recycling in the Republic has been lifted thanks to a cross-border deal which will result in over 200,000 tonnes of waste glass being reprocessed in the north over the next three years.
The agreement, covering virtually all consumer glass deposits in the State, was reached this week by Rehab Recycling Partnership and County Fermanagh-based Quinn Glass with the assistance of Irish Minister for the Environment Martin Cullen and the Irish packaging compliance scheme, Repak.
It comes just over a year after the closure of the Ardagh plant in Ringsend left Ireland as the only EU member State without the capability to reprocess its own waste glass, prompting fears that recycling would become economically unviable here.
Sean Quinn, Managing Director of the Quinn Group stated that Quinn Glass is in a position to recycle all the glass collected in Ireland and is delighted to be involved in this agreement. He also thanked Rehab, Repak and the Minister for the Environment, Mr. Martin Cullen for their assistance.
